Kitten Update and a Word About Neutering
After spending the better part of this afternoon at the animal clinic, the kittens have been determined to be all females (we couldn't exactly tell, ourselves) and we are happy to report that they tested negative for feline leukemia, feline AIDS and worms. Woohoo!

About neutering: do it, now. While at the clinic I saw pictures and clippings posted on a bulletin board advertising dozens of kittens and puppies for adoption. Litters of six, litters of nine, on and on. We were lucky to find just four in our backyard, which means we have to find a home for just two, since we are keeping the tiger-striped and white ones. The next step is to trap the mother cat, have her neutered, then release her. The Animal Care and Control people are going to drop off a trap for us to borrow when one becomes available. It's a little extra trouble, but worth it in the long run.
Having said all that, here is an alternative point of view about the concept of "trap-neuter-release."

So, what do Steve and Mikey think about the new intruders? Are they jealous? FOUR cats total -- you guys are in for some interesting social dynamics!

"Interesting social dynamics," indeed! I guess we will just see how it goes...the kittens are installed in the spare bedroom, behind closed doors for the time being. Mikey and Steve are very aware of their presence and are somewhat anxious about it. We are going to sloooooowly integrate the kittens and we'll just have to see how it goes. Mikey and Steve are pretty neurotic(!) and *very* spoiled, and they've been used to having things their way for almost five years.
We are going to use some methods we have found on the Web such as exposing both groups of cats to each other's scents via cat toys and used towels before they meet each other face-to-face. This is definitely a probationary period for the kittens.
