Leave My Child Alone!

Quoted from an email received today from TrueMajorityAction.org:

The so-called No Child Left Behind Act has a little-known provision that mandates schools to provide our children’s personal information to the Pentagon so they can be recruited into the armed forces. The law also allows parents and guardians to stop their kids’ schools from providing this information to the Pentagon, but few know what is going on or how to stop it. Our friends at Working Assets have built an online tool to make it easy. Just click here to keep the military’s hands off your kids. And if you know other parents who could use this service, forward this e-mail to them.

What this means is that because the Bush administration was able to slip this little proviso into about a gazillion pages of No Child Left Behind legislation, military recruiters will have more access than ever to your children. Obviously, Bush doesn't want to leave your child behind when the call to war sounds again.

Now, I don't have a problem with mandatory registration with the selective services (a.k.a. "The Draft")—someone's got to do the dirty work of "defending our country" (whatever that means anymore)—but the cynic in me has laugh. The fact that Bush had to hide this article in an education reform bill is an admission of how unpopular the war in Iraq is.
