It's Official

W. Mark Felt is "Deep Throat." I knew it all along. Actually, no, I didn't.

In an interview with CNN, G. Gordon Liddy's terse response to this breaking news was, "If he (W. Mark Felt) were interested in performing his duty, he would have gone to the grand jury with his information."

Hmm. This from one of the perpetrators of the break-in who served five years of a twenty-year sentence in maximum security for his crime. Interesting how his official Web site paints a rosy portrait:

Mr. Liddy resigned his White House post to accept the positions of General Counsel of the 1972 Republican presidential campaign and the campaign finance committee, with additional duties as Campaign political intelligence director. The rest is history.*

For his role in Watergate, and for refusing steadfastly to implicate others,* Mr. Liddy was sentenced to over twenty years in prison. He served nearly five years, many in maximum security, including 106 days of solitary confinement, before his release by President Carter 'in the interests of justice'.

(* italics representing loud guffaws are mine)

Wow, he really sounds like a great guy, doesn't he? A true patriot. Frankly, I don't understand how anyone can take anything that comes out of that man's mouth with anything more than a grain of salt. I even know some people who listen to his radio broadcast, but I'm sorry, the moment he broke the law back in '72 he gave up any credibility he could ever have as a political pundit.

Whether or not I agree with any of his idealogy is immaterial. He broke the law, and in a big way. It wasn't just a hasty error in judgment,
an act of youthful ignorance; such acts are forgiveable. No, it was a premeditated, cynical act committed in defiance and disrespect of all Americans. And now he's another yack-yack-yacker on the radio. That guy just needs to shut up.

And I feel the exact same way about Oliver North.
