What's wrong wth this?
A 19-year-old man in Texas has been sentenced to life imprisonment for helping a 17-year-old woman end her pregnancy by stepping on her stomach while she punched herself. Although she was not prosecuted because she still has the right to an abortion (for the time being, at least), he received the sentence because of Texas' new fetal protection law.
Something's wrong with this picture. Now, I am not staunchly on one side or the other of the abortion debate, but I think there is a serious disconnect here. Granted, the woman should have received the procedure—assuming the fetus was not too developed (the report does not give this information)—at a clinic, but this was a consensual act. How do you justify sentencing this man to life in prison?
Is this a case of the conservative right wrongly applying the law to punish the left?
