Kentucky Fried PR
I just received the latest PETA email rant against Kentucky Fried Chicken the other day. Apparently KFC is fighting back against all the negative publicity about animal abuses committed by its suppliers' factory farms and slaughterhouses, starting with the implementation of an "Animal Welfare" section on its Website (the section still being under construction at the time of this writing). The email also mentions that "the company’s two remaining independent animal welfare board members have resigned" and encourages PETA members "to really put more pressure on the company now."
One might ask how you can advocate animal rights in slaughterhouses since, well, the animals are sent there to die in the first place. That's a good question. One of the things PETA is campaigning for is to replace "electrical stunning and throat-slitting with controlled-atmosphere killing," which is a painless method of killing that involves replacing oxygen with an inert gas such as nitrogen.
You can read about the whole issue here. It's not pretty, and will change the way you think about where the things you eat come from. My stand on vegetarianism is that, unless I am willing to kill it, I won't eat it. I do not believe that animals exist solely for the benefit of humans. Now, if I was stranded on a desert island with nothing to eat but a few coconuts, some birds that I could kill with rocks, and whatever fish I could catch, you'd better believe me when I say that I would no longer be a vegetarian. But that's an extremely hypothetical situation and thankfully not my current, day-to-day reality.
I am a PETA member and support the vast majority of their campaigns, but I had to smirk a little when I read the headline on the KentuckyFriedCruelty.com homepage which states, "Pamela Anderson Releases Explicit New Video." Um, no, it's not what you might think.
